As I said before, to download something you need to open a terminal and type “apt-get install <package name>“. Here are some important packages that you might be interested:
- Package names are underscored.
1. Synaptic is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command, but graphical! You can find any program for backtrack there. Just type “apt-get install synaptic” in a terminal.
2. Google Chrome: “apt-get install chromium-browser“. The internet browser from backtrack is awfull!
3. Multimedia: Like Windows Media Player. Backtrack multimedia can use VLC, Amarok, MPlayer. In order for multimedia applications can run on Backtrack, it takes a lot of multimedia codecs. Installing these will install a lot of multimedia codecs.
Package names are: vlc and mplayer.
4. Instant Messaging: amsn, emesene, pidgin. Linux also have skype.
5. PDF Reader: acroreader, xpdf.
6. To replace Winamp you can use Rhythmbox, Banshee, Amarok.
7. Office: openoffice.org. It is important to type “.org”.
8. CD/DVD Burning: K3b.
9. Image Editor: Adobe Photoshop? Linux has it: GIMP.
10. Unrar: unrar. Need to comment?
11. Kontact: a personal information management suite, combining e-mail, calendar, news feeds, addressbook and more in one place.
